Idea
I have created
"Valentine Codes" for young learners to follow- great letter
recognition and following direction activity. I simply list 3
letters that they are to click on and then answer questions about
the Valentine Bear they just created. The kids love it! I challenge
them to come up with their own codes too. |

Valentines' Day Games and
Crafts

|
|
As I teacher, I am
a recycler! I find a use for everything. My favorite thing to
collect at this time of the year are heart shaped candy boxes.
You can store Valentine's Day puzzles in them. They make great storage
containers for my teacher-made games too! Place them at your
learning centers with fun activities inside and your students will
love it! |
Breaking Hearts Game- I used to
love making these for my kindergarteners and now I make these for my
own kids all the time. I cut out large construction paper hearts
(red, white, and pink) I cut them in half to resemble a broken
heart. On one half I write a number. On the other half I attach the
same amount with small stickers. I put them all in a
recycled heart shaped candy box. The object is to match the
pieces and create a heart. |
Cooking Involve your child in making these fun and festive Valentine's
Pancakes. Add red food coloring to your pancake batter. Pour heart
shaped pancakes. Top with some whip cream, strawberries or red sprinkles
for a special Valentine Breakfast. |
|
Handprint
Flower- I have the kids
cut out a long green strip for a stem and then 2 leaves. The fancy
edged scissors make the leave very unique. We paint one of the kids'
hands with red or pink paint. We stamp their hand onto the opposite
colored paper. When dry, we cut around the handprint and attach it
as the flower. We include this poem with
it...

(Name of Recipient) can you guess who it is that
loves you best? I'll give you 3 guesses- One-Two-Three! I
knew you would guess it is ME! This flower is quite special as
you can see. I made it from my handprint just for you from
me! I made it with paper, paint and glue to show you
just how much I LOVE YOU! |
Stained Glass Heart- You must use Cut-rite Waxed Paper and better brands of
colored tissue paper. You will need small bowls, paint brushes, a
white sheet of paper and a permanent marker. You will also need
Liquid Starch.
Cut small squares (bigger ones for
little kids) out of Valentine colored tissue paper- red and,
different shades of pink. On a white sheet of paper draw a large
heart. Lay a sheet of waxed paper over the drawing. With your
permanent marker, trace the heart you drew on the paper onto the
waxed paper. Pour liquid starch into small bowls. Using the
paint brush, paint a small area on the waxed paper within the
outline of the heart. Tell the kids it is okay to lay pieces
of tissue just outside the outline. Lay the tissue squares
onto the wet area-overlapping. Paint starch over the top of
these pieces. The goal is to fill in the entire heart. Continue
until you have done so. Let dry overnight. When
completely dry, carefully peel away the waxed paper. My older
students managed this on their own once shown what to do. I did this
task for my younger students. Laminate the hearts and hang in
a well lit area (from the, in a window...) They are gorgeous!
I have taught preschool through 3rd grade and have done this
project with all of my students and even my own young
children. We actually did a shape every month. As the year
progressed so did their skills. |
Valentine's Day Heart Wreath- Cut a
large ring out of sturdy paper. Provide your kids with a
basketful of hearts in a variety of Valentine colors. They are
to glue hearts all around the shape to create a wreath. I
added a math activity to this- I asked the students to estimate how
many hearts it would take to fill in their wreath. They record
their guess and then count the number they actually
used. One year we even used different sizes to see
if it took more or less when we used bigger or smaller shapes.
